What is the purpose of COP 27?

One of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution on the planet is currently sponsoring the World Conference against Climate Change. Curious, right? And keep in mind that they are not only contributing to plastic pollution in a few countries, but to the entire planet!

On November 8th, the event started and on the 2nd day I found out incredible news such as the CEO of CEMEX proposing that 32% of their heavy trucks be electric by 2030, in order to align with their previously announced commitment to zero emissions by 2050. I definitely don‘t think that the top executives of global companies are taking the necessary seriousness in their decisions against climate change. Let‘s review the current case of CEMEX:

  1. On one hand, they will gradually introduce 30% of their fleet of electric trucks by 2030, that‘s 8 years from now!
  2. Meanwhile, they continue to exploit beautiful hills and natural resources that will release tons and tons of CO2 into the atmosphere to obtain stone and minerals for cement and other products.
Does Mr. Fernando Gonzalez-Olivieri, CEO of CEMEX, really think he will make a difference with the truck proposal? That won‘t capture even half a gram of CO2. It‘s better if he raises his finger and puts a bow and a happy face. Because with that proposal, he is not providing a solution to the damage and I would like to know what other immediate actions he will take to make the CO2 that has already been released into the atmosphere return to the ground and stay there? The solutions already exist, they just have to make the right decision and implement it as soon as possible, like by 2023.

The situation we are experiencing requires drastic and immediate actions. The energy and creativity of leaders should focus on seeking new economic systems that change the market dynamics and primarily protect the environment and therefore our future. I don‘t see any leader who understands that this urgent change is very holistic and that we need to think about: economy, production, consumption dynamics, supply, sales, etc... it‘s about changing the entire commercial dynamic and slowing down the economy in record time. I believe it is possible, we just have to get the ball rolling and find the solution before it‘s too late.
Environmental Summits have been happening for years, since around 1972; scientific information on global warming has existed since the early 90s; concrete proposals for all countries in terms of energy and development came with the Paris Agreement in 2016. So there are no excuses for these environmental delays in 2022, this information is not new, it has been around for years but has never been given enough importance, probably because our leaders leave their homes and don‘t see the melting, floods, or the crops and biodiversity being lost due to climate changes and it‘s easy to believe that we are still okay. The sad part is that in the coming years, the most affected will be the usual vulnerable population, who have contributed the least to this problem, and in the following years none of us will be exempt.

Transitioning to electric fleets by 2030 is called Greenwashing and is not a real commitment to what the world needs today, if we continue with these proposals, we will be leading humanity down the road to collective suicide. I have faith in the leaders who are there and I believe that there will be someone who will come out to propose and demand real and radical changes, in the meantime, I will sit back and enjoy the show and wait to hear the proposals from Coca-Cola before the end of #cop27, but what our leaders have proposed so far is like trying to cover the sun with a finger.
